ROSAS DANCE AT THE LOUVRE WHILE EVI CATS FILMS
FORÊT, a film by Evi Cats – based on the production Forêt by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Némo Flouret- will kick off the 18th edition Journées du Film sur l’Art festival at the Louvre March 5
In 2022, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, together with the young French choreographer Némo Flouret created Fôret a choreography for the Grande Galerie and the Salles Rouges as well as the Italian and French collections of the Louvre. Evi Cats – a regular Rosas collaborator since 2022 – accompanied the rehearsals and performances and created a personal film right in the thick of the live performance. The image of the eleven dancers weaving their way through whirlwinds, shipwrecks and burning cities certainly resonates with our times. The camera moves almost imperceptibly between the dancers and the audience, alternating between intimate close-ups and wide shots of the imposing scenery. All this is accompanied by a musical dramaturgy by Alain Franco. Instead of trying to match the grandeur of the Louvre, he opted to create a kaleidoscopic soundtrack that traverses the space, seeking a connection with the viewer. Unsurprisingly for the Louvre, Mona Lisa has the last word.
Filmmaker Evi Cats (1994) lives and works in Brussels. Walls That Scream, her documentary about the traces of police violence in Brussels, premiered at IDFA 2022 and was shortly after awarded the VAF Wildcard. Her latest and most fictional film, Waiting for a Sun Storm, touches on the (feminist) city and its layers of texture and time. The film won the Best Belgian Student Short Film award at Film Fest Gent.
