Bist du bei mir (The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988)

Invited by Festival Aperto, Reggio Emilia, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker will create a new choreography for the Collezione Maramotti.

Since 2015, De Keersmaeker has been moving dance from the black box into the white cube. This resulted in highly-acclaimed projects including Work/Travail/Arbeid (2015, Wiels, Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, MoMA), Dark Red (2020-2022, Kolumba, Fondation Beyeler, Neue Nationalgalerie), and Forêt (2022, Louvre).

In this new project, De Keersmaeker draws on her most recent and perhaps most personal solo dance, The Goldberg Variations, BWV 998 (2020), based on Bach’s composition of the same name.

In The Goldberg Variations, Bach pushes the boundaries of the musical theme in a stunning play of variations, canons, and fugues. The composer starts from a simple and quiet melody, which gradually develops into a musical cosmos characterized by an extraordinary variety and an unparalleled complexity.

Reimagined as a site-specific project in dialogue with Collezione Maramotti’s collection and architecture, this performance - created in collaboration with pianist Alain Franco - takes on the title Bist du bei mir, in reference to a 17th-century song by Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel. This song was recorded in the second Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach, in close proximity to the Goldberg Aria, which in this notebook appears for the first time as a standalone composition.
